The Story Of How The Dallas Stars Got Their Name

You probably think that the Dallas Stars got their name from their predecessor, the Minnesota North Stars. This may surprise you, but that's not the case! FOGSquad has the exclusive scoop; read on to learn more about this NHL franchise.

The Dallas Stars were, once upon a time, the Minnesota North Stars. The North Stars received their name from the motto of the state of Minnesota, "L'Étoile du Nord." This French phrase translates into none other than "the Star of the North." Now, you may think that the Dallas Stars hoped to keep some of this history as they moved from Bloomington, Minnesota to Dallas, Texas. This is a logical response. No one would fault you for thinking so.

In reality, however, the Dallas Stars are named so because they're a team that should be, at the very least, one astronomical unit (93 million miles) away from us, the citizens of Earth.

Now think about it. When you think of a star twinkling in the sky, what do you usually imagine? You probably imagine how far away that distant little star is, burning away millions of miles from us tiny souls dancing on the shell of this planet we call Earth. Now instead of a star, burning to its own star death, imagine Dallas Star Jason Spezza. Doesn't that feel just as right? Doesn't that feel just as good?

Van Maanen's star, the closest solitary white dwarf, is approximately 14 light-years from Earth. Wouldn't you rather that star be Dallas Star #14 Jamie Benn?

Imagine two stars circling each other, two lonely stars in space. Two stars, pulled by each other's orbits, circling each other like so many birds of prey, so far that they seem merely a single dot in our vast night sky. Isn't it enough to think of these two stars as Alex Goligoski and Cody Eakin, two defensemen for the Dallas Stars? Do you lose anything, any of your innocence, your trust, your hope, your ambition, for thinking this way?

The closest the sun—our nearest star—ever gets to the Earth is 91 million miles. 91, like the number Tyler Seguin wears with the Dallas Stars.

If you ask me, 91 million miles is the exact distance Tyler Seguin, and the rest of the Dallas Stars, should be from all of us.
